Rockford is in the center of northern Illinois, the state’s second largest city, just across the state line from Beloit, Wisconsin, less than a two-hour drive northwest of downtown Chicago, and has all of the amenities offered by large metropolitan areas with only a fraction of the traffic congestion and population density. Rockford was built in the mid-1800s around a ford over the Rock River, from which its name is derived. The terrain around Rockford is hilly and green, and supports a number of superior golf courses and hiking trails through dense forests that line the river valley and earned the early nickname of Forest City. Rockford is now called the “City of Gardens,” and maintains tree-lined streets and miles of city parks and river walkways. Rockford’s significant immigrant populations, particularly the Swedish, Italian and Eastern European communities who built the initial industries, have contributed to a wonderful selection of ethnic restaurants and unique shopping opportunities. Family-run bed and breakfast inns offer the richest encounter with local cuisine and culture, but the Rockford metropolitan area also is large enough to offer the best in contemporary, full-service hotels at a comfortable distance from downtown Chicago.
